Drive Before Drive, the only places you could find satin zip-up jackets with giant gold scorpions emblazoned on the back were truck stops along Texas turnpikes. But somehow, some way, Ryan Gosling pulled off the unpulloffable—again. Bonus points: Every time he had to peel out of a parking lot or punch a guy’s face in, he was rocking those super-cool driving gloves.

Crazy. Stupid. Love. Style was a strong factor in the Year of Gosling. In Crazy. Stupid. Love., he put on a style clinic—burgundy suits, killer sunglasses, great hair. And when he wasn’t decked out in Alexander McQueen and Versace, he was naked, putting us all to shame.

The GQ Style Oscars

Saluting the year’s best dressed men in movies. The man up there on the left made this list twice, for two very different looks, in two very different movies. Who else? Our nominees include Alexander Skarsgard, Michael Fassbender and—default winner of for best newcomer—Benedict Cumberbatch from the best dressed movie of the year, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Oscar snubs Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio, ‘Tintin’: Which omission hurts the most? (entertainment weekly)

Shame, indeed. Despite being one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011, thanks to his mesmerizing performance as a sex addict in the harrowing drama Shame, Michael Fassbender was surprisingly not called among the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards. Long considered a shoo-in for a Best Actor nominee, Fassbender was edged out by first-time nominee Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and dark horse nominee Demián Bichir for A Better Life. (EW’s Dave Karger hoped Oscar voters would take notice, and it seems like they most certainly did.)

But Fassbender wasn’t the only shocking snub in the Best Actor category.  Ryan Gosling was a triple threat in 2011 with his acclaimed turns in Drive, The Ides of March, and Crazy Stupid Love. (Though the latter would have been in the Best Supporting Actor race.) Between breaking up street fights, being a good sport about your, uh, supporting actor, and of course, turning in great performances, fans of Gosling and Fassbender are no doubt wondering this morning, ‘Jeez, what’s a guy have to do to get an Oscar nomination?!’

Joining Fassbender and Gosling in the notable snubs in the acting races are Golden Globe and SAG nominee Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar (Best Actor), Gosling’s Drive co-star Albert Brooks (Best Supporting Actor), and We Need To Talk About Kevin‘s Tilda Swinton, who lost her spot in the Best Actress race to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‘s Rooney Mara.

“I wanted to make Pretty in Pink with a head smashing. Yeah. Like, I wanted to make a violent John Hughes movie. Because John Hughes movies are perfect for me. Or almost perfect. They just need a little violence. You need blood and cotton candy.”

“A friend of mine showed me photographs [of Ryan Gosling] from the paparazzi - and when I say friend, I mean me alone in my room looking at the computer. And it’s like him walking around and he literally looks like he’s in a photoshoot, like he just came off the runway, like the pea coat is like this with the scarf. There are ones of me, and I literally look like the neighbor who never really comes out of his house, and when he does, you’re like ‘Maybe you should just stay in.’”

Drive (2011) by Nicolas Winding Refn

I’d understand anyone who found Drive to be an irritating flick that is trying just a bit too hard to be cool. I for one find it impossible to resist the cool factor on this one.

First, Ryan Gosling has to be one of the coolest actors of his generation — and although he’s a full-on poser in Drive, there’s much more going on behind his annoyingly composed and cool facade (the expression on his face when he’s looking at Carey Mulligan at the end of the skull crushing sequence is a perfect case of multi-layered acting). Incidentally, Gosling’s performance reminds me of Clooney’s in The American.

Second, Carey Mulligan is so fucking adorable (as usual) that it’s impossible not to care for her.

Third, I don’t think Drive would be as appealing without its fantastically graphic scenes of violence.

Fourth, the car scenes are thrilling, although too few and far between; interestingly enough, Gosling’s driving strikes me as very symptomatic of the entire movie: controlled, sleek, smooth but with the occasional burst of explosive violence.

Finally, to wrap it all up in a nice pretty bow, there’s the sexy soundtrack that goes so well with all that driving through LA at night. I couldn’t help but bob my head to the music.

Oh, and last but not least, you’ve got to love the jacket. Priceless. I bet Gosling found his character as soon as he tried the jacket on.
