McIntosh Ross - "The Great Lakes"

I got their record yesterday in the mail, and it’s gorgeous. Although their duets are a bit JohnnyCash&JuneCarter-ish country (fine, but not usually my cup of tea), the bluesy, sparse arrangements captured me and the lyrics are so truthful and intimate, basically beautiful love songs to one another. After more than two decades of marriage AND being in a band together, that’s very moving to me.

all my worries, all my cares
all the pitfalls, all the snares
all the times I wasn’t there
all the gifts I never shared

one day we’ll know
one day we’ll see
till then we’ll hope and believe

all my words and worldly goods
all my flaws still shining through
all the things I didn’t do
all my trust I place in you

Angie Stone - “I Ain’t Hearin’ U”
Music video directed by Bille Woodruff. “I Ain’t Hearin’ U” appears on the Stax Records album UNEXPECTED, in stores tomorrow November 23rd, 2009.

With Joss, Angie and Alicia all dropping records this fall/early winter, I’m more than soul-satisfied. Now I can quietly wait for Jilly’s new music when she gets bored with acting (and being a new mom).

You’re tired
And you say you’re angry
You’re thankful for
This blessed rain
And you think you’d know
But your old friends
Have to tell you again

Your books
Taught you
All you know
Your tastes and patterns
And your TV shows
But you can never follow
Where they won’t let you go

Everything But The Girl - “Each And Every One” + “Rollercoaster” (live, early nineties)

Beautiful bossanova-inspired music & Tracey’s voice to start the week.

“Being kind is just a way to keep me under your thumb
And I can cry because that’s something we’ve always done
You tell me ‘I’m free of the past now’ and all those lies
Then offer me the same thing in a different guise”

Deacon Blue - “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again/Dignity” medley, live in 2007

07/11/2009

I know so rarely that things come your way
Your ways are tender and your paths are straight
Your mind’s not lived in the way ours are set
Your heart is open to love and regret

Rings and letters they pass you by
You wish them well and seldom cry
For stones and promises and wedding sighs
You’ve known the times that you’ve lived and died

The Bible - “Honey Be Good” One of my favourite songs ever!

“On a day like today
I’ll believe anything you say
Who’ll be there
When your heart hits the ground?
Now that I’m not around
Be good, and if you can’t be good
Be good at being bad like
Every girl should
Oh honey be good”

Deacon Blue - “Loaded” (1987)

Aptly titled, this song is about the days glaswegian Deacon Blue went down to London to sign their first contract and the music execs were all fancy restaurants, expensive clothes and “there were gold AmEx cards flying all over the place”.

Some of their bewilderment could be traced in the music vid, with gap-toothed cutie Ricky Ross, the angelic Lorraine MacIntosh and the boys wandering around London, wide-eyeing everything.

And, while I clearly wasn’t looking, Ricky Ross and Lorraine Mcintosh (former Deacon Blue and hubby&wife in real life) formed a duo! And they have a record out!
I’m still bewildered at the very notion and so happy they finally did it. The record should be in the style of Ricky’s solo records: Americana, Roots and a bit of Scottish folk thrown in. I will know for sure when the record I ordered arrives!
Here are some infos on the record and preview of some songs.
Prepare to my pic spam, tune spam, lyrics posting, from then and now. Deacon Blue simply made the record of my life, and I’m still grateful for that.

In the meanwhile Boo Hewerdine has…no, he hasn’t reformed The Bible no… but he has a new record out. Should sound mellow and poetic as the last ones.”Harmonograph” was fab.
